Wylie

Brownwood Lions suffered a disappointing loss to the Wylie Bulldogs Friday night in a 42-7 loss.   Brownwood Head Football Coach Chuck Howard stated that he was extremely disappointed.

Howard explained that in a district that is as good as Brownwood’s, players have to come out to every game ready to play.  In some districts that do not have this amount of top rated  teams in the state, Howard stated that a team can have a week they don’t play their best and still pull out a win.

“In our district, we are one of top two (4A districts) in the state, you can’t afford to not show up and win,” said Howard.

Howard stated that he was disappointed in how the Lions played on both sides of the football.

“It was disappointing, we didn’t execute on either side of the ball, in any facet of the game after the first turn over,” said Howard.  “You know the thing I think we have done all year is that we have come out ready to play, we’ve played hard, we’ve played physical, we’ve tackled well, we’ve really done a great job  controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Last week’s loss to Stephenville, I think we did those same things.  But this week, I don’t think we executed on either side of the ball tonight.  I didn’t think we had a great deal of emotion coming out.  When you play a good team like Wylie, you have got to play and I just didn’t think we played well tonight at all.”

Earlier in the game, Howard stated that the team just wasn’t the same team that he has seen in the past few weeks.

“Our players are better than that, our team is better than that, but we didn’t exhibit that tonight,” said Howard.

He acknowledged that Abilene Wylie is a very good team, with a very good coaching staff.

“In this district, you’ve got to be ready to play every Friday night.  We just didn’t tackle well.  We got whipped on both sides of the ball,” he said.

Although he was disappointed, Howard stated that he still believes in the Lions and that they can pull out a great season.

“These guys have been going at it for 11 straight weeks, playing well with the exception of tonight,” said Howard.  “Tuesday we will go back to work and get ready for Snyder.  We’ve got to decide where we are going.”

The Lions will have an open week next week, which gives time for some recovery from recent injuries.  Some key players have suffered injuries such as Isaac Sanchez with a bruised thigh and Connor Howard suffering a possible broken collarbone in tonight’s game.

The Lions will face the Snyder Tigers at Gordon Wood Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on October 31st.  The winner of this game will advance to the playoffs according to Howard.

“I know our players are going to be ready to play,” said Howard.  When asked how he felt about the junior high, freshman and JV teams beating Wylie this week, Howard stated, “I’m proud of the direction we are headed in every facet of our program.  This pill’s just hard to swallow tonight.”
