A hard fought battle against the Lampasas Badgers left the Brownwood Lions disappointed with a heartbreaking 61-56 loss in the last seconds of the game Friday night.   There was over 1000 total yards of combined offense in the game, but some missed opportunities on defense caused the Lions to come up short.

The Lions marched down in the opening drive with a touchdown followed by a field goal starting the game out with a 10-0 lead.  It was a back and forth game after that with the two teams at a tie at the end of the first half after a 45 yard field goal by Brownwood.  The Lions allowed the Badgers to make three touchdowns in the third quarter.  The Lions tied it up again at the start of the fourth quarter, and in the last 1:26 of the game, Brownwood came back and with a 1 point lead which was foiled by a Lampasas touchdown in the last 36 seconds of the game.

According to Brownwood Lions Head Coach Chuck Howard, he couldn’t have asked more of the offensive play.  He commended the performance of kicker Abraham Oviedo, who had a perfect game with 2 field goals and perfect on extra points.

“We couldn’t have asked for more from our offense.  With 568 yards of offense, they did a tremendous job,” said Howard.

He wasn’t as pleased with the defense but personally took responsibility for the short falls that in his opinion cost the game.

“Defense didn’t play well.  We weren’t getting blocks and making plays and that falls squarely on my shoulders,” said Howard.  “There were 3-4 stops on defense that were missed.  I’m disappointed primarily in myself.”

Although Howard was disappointed in the defensive play, he stated he was still proud of all of the players and how they played for the entire game.

“I’m so proud of these kids they way they are fighting and playing hard.  We’ve got to get healthy.  We’ve got to tough it out and go to work tomorrow,” he said.

Howard stated that the team will take a look at the game film Saturday morning and get to work preparing for a win against another strong district foe, the Gatesville Hornets.

When looking at the district, Howard stated that he doesn’t rely on records or numbers.

“The bottom line is we can’t worry about everyone else.  We’re going to go back to work tomorrow morning and get ready to beat Gatesville in order to make it to the playoffs,” he said.

Howard stated that the Lions will have to make the last two district games count.

“It’s going to be a dog fight in every game.  We’ve got to prepare and prepare well,” said Howard.

Brownwood moves to 1-2 in district and 3-5 for the season.   The Lions will face Gatesville at Gordon Wood Stadium on November 1st.  Kick off will be at 7:30 p.m.
