The Brownwood Lions fell to the Liberty Hill Panthers, 20-31 on a cold and very windy Friday night.
After playing great defensively in the first half of the game, the second half proved to be very disappointing to the Lions with many missed opportunities to change the outcome of the game. According to Brownwood High School Head Coach Chuck Howard, he was really disappointed how the first half ended when Liberty Hill scored and took the lead in the last seconds which took a lot of momentum from the Lions.
“It was very disappointing, we had a great opportunity to win the game,” said Howard. “Defense did great in the first half. They got leverage on us and got some great plays off. We let them off the leash.”
Howard explained that he was very proud of how the Lions’ defense played in the first half until Liberty Hill pulled a fullback trap in the last play of the first half to score the touchdown.
Coming into the third quarter, Liberty Hill’s first possession ticked 4:27 off the clock and ended with a touchdown. Liberty Hill scored two more times before the end of the game, keeping the Lions scoreless in the second half until the last 2:36 in the fourth quarter. The Lions would drive deep into Panther territory in the last seconds of the game but were unable to score.
Although the game was a loss and he felt the team didn’t execute well on offense against Liberty Hill, Howard stated he was very proud of his team.
“I’ve seen great things. These kids are playing hard and fighting hard,” said Howard. “We’ve just got to get better at what we do.”
He stated that the coaching staff and team will take a look and see what needs to be fixed before facing Lampasas next week.
“We’ve got to line up against Lampasas and take care of business so we can be a playoff team,” Howard said.
Lampasas will be another tough opponent, but the Lions will be ready according to Howard.
“Lampasas is a Wing-T football team, a very physical team,” said Howard. “I’m very proud of our kids; they are playing hard, fighting hard. We’ve just got to get better execution in some areas.”
Liberty Hill takes the lead in District 8-3A going 2:0, Brownwood moves to 1:1 in district.
