Brownwood Lions Football

The Brownwood Lions took a 70-27 beating at Gordon Wood Stadium Friday night as they faced a very talented Fort Worth All Saints Episcopal team.  This was a record for points scored against the Brownwood Lions in modern day history according to Dallas Huston, the voice of the Lions football games on KOXE.

With five starters suspended and 2 starters injured, the Lions faced their most difficult opponent as an underdog without their key players.  Although many of the team was out, other players stepped up to the occasion and worked hard to try to hold off the All Saints’ quick moving offense and much larger players.  Four All Saints team members are committed to D1 teams such as Ohio State, University of Louisville and Kansas State.  A total of 13 team members are expected to sign to play at the collegiate level on scholarships.

Brownwood Head Coach Chuck Howard was disappointed at the game’s end but refused to make excuses.  He stated that the team knew they were going against a very good and talented team.

“We knew we had to go in to move and control the ball, get first downs, and keep the ball away from them, but we didn’t do that,” said Howard  “You just can’t make any mistakes like that or have any turnovers against a team like this.”

He stated that the team had some strong moments, with two good drives and some very good defense at times.  All Saints gave the Lions some challenges with their D1 commits that are very good up front.

Howard stated that the Lions “played hard, but made youthful mistakes.”

In the second half, he stated that they were tired and missed tackles.  “We’re going to work hard to improve.  I have faith in these kids; we’re going to get these mistakes corrected.  We aren’t going to make excuses; this was an opportunity for younger players to get some experience.  We expect them to play and produce.”

Howard stated that the team will look at tonight’s game and work to improve.

Next week, the Lions will face Graham, the state 7-on-7 champions without 7 of their starters once again.  Graham is ranked in the top ten 3A schools in Texas.  Howard stated that it will be a challenge but that they will prepare to “beat Graham.”

“It will be a big challenge but our kids will rise to the occasion,” Howard said.  He stated that the football team as well as all of the athletes on Brownwood High School sports teams work hard and deserve the public’s respect.  “These kids work hard, and they are very committed to representing Brownwood.”
