The Brownwood Lions struggled to get points on the board in their season opener Friday night against the Fort Worth All Saints Episcopal at Fort Worth Brewer Stadium.
Brownwood Head Coach Bob Shipley stated that it was a problem of coverage and assignments that blew the game for the Lions, allowing All Saints to come away with a 31-7 win.
“It is my job to bring the best out of these kids and I didn’t do that,” said Shipley after the game. “We’re going to look at the film tomorrow and get these things corrected.”
Penalties plagued the team as well with 11 penalties for 105 yards in addition to a pair of touchdowns by WR Cooper Howey that were called back because of penalties. Injuries and illness also were factors with Lions Caleb Wilburn, Eddie Duque, and Kamon Ontiveros each leaving the game early. All three were key players that could have impacted the game’s outcome both offensively and defensively.
Shipley did not make excuses, instead said that the team made costly mistakes against a very good All Saints team. He stated that All Saints is a good team, but that he didn’t feel they were 31-7 better than the Lions, but that they made less mistakes.
Next week, September 7th, the Lions will face another good team, the Graham Steers. According to Shipley, the Lions will have to be on their ‘A’ game.
“They are going to be tough, they still have some players,” said Shipley. “We have a lot of guys beat up so next week we are going to have to have all hands on deck.”
