The Brownwood Lions came to win Friday night as they shut out the Gatesville Hornets and enjoyed playing the first game of the season on new turf at Gordon Wood Stadium. The last time they had a shut out game was in 2009 against the Sweetwater Mustangs.
The young team was ready and impressive in the first half although they got a little complacent in the second half according to Athletic Director and Head Coach Chuck Howard.
“Overall 35-0, as young as we are on both sides of the ball, I couldn’t be more proud,” said Coach Howard. “I’m proud of their effort. The team is taking it personal; they have accountability in how they play.”
The team as a whole worked together well. Their investment of hours of hard work and early rising for practice had paid off according to Howard.
“We showed we could move the football, the quarterback could move the ball down the field and that we can play some rock solid defense,” said Howard. “Their investment paid off tonight. We’re going to celebrate tonight and tomorrow and then we have some film to watch, we have some things to take care of.”
Penalties were horrific in the game for both teams. The Lions had four personal fouls and one ejection. Their total penalties numbered 16 for 147 yards. Howard stated that these penalties take away from the great things the team did Friday night.
“The second half had lots of penalties and sloppy plays. We take these (penalties) personally,” said Howard. “We’re going to take care of these and move on.”
Howard stated that defensively the team has improved greatly from last year which made him proud.
“I’m extremely pleased how we played defensively, pleased with the effort. We have a lot of work to do and we’ll be challenged next week,” said Howard.
He encouraged fans to continue coming to the Lions’games, “These players work hard and they deserve our support.”
The Lions will face Graham High School (the #3 team in the state according to the Harris Poll) next Friday at Gordon Wood Stadium at 7:30 PM.
