Written by Rowonna McNeely – The first day of school is always interesting to hear about. I don’t care who you are. It’s a time that your child is away from you and experiencing a new part of their life.
We had prepared for the first day of school. Almost all the school supplies were purchased earlier in the week, the perfect first day outfit was picked.
Now, Kiera is a big JoJo Siwa fan. Don’t know who that is? It’s ok. I had to look her up. She is a teenager that is a singer, dancer and actress. She also has her own line of clothes and big bows.
About a month before school started Kiera saw a backpack in a store. “Look!!” She exclaimed. “It’s a JoJo-Siwa-backpack!”
I had no idea what she said. She ran the name all together. “What is it?” I asked as we made a beeline down the aisles.
Once again, she responded as fast as she could, “JoJo Siwa!”
“Can we get one?” She asked excitedly.
“Not today, baby.” I continued on down the aisle. “Next time.” I assured her.
Well, next time came along and they were sold out. Kiera actually took it really well and we looked at other backpacks.
She did manage to find a JoJo Siwa t-shirt for her first day of school. She was ecstatic.
As the days got closer, we only had to get a couple more items. I took Kiera back to the store and we checked out the notebooks. “Ooh! Look this one has unicorns.” I pointed out.
“Oh, that’s cute.” She responded. She said it in her I-don’t-want-to-hurt-your-feelings tone of voice. I put the unicorn notebook back on the shelf. We perused the shelves a bit more and then suddenly, light shone down from heaven, the angels sang… ok, not really.
“Wait! That’s it!” Kiera pointed at a gold sparkly heart notebook sitting on the shelf. “That looks like something JoJo Siwa would have!”
Quickly, she picked it up and grabbed another sparkly notebook, holding them with absolute revere. “These are the ones I would like.” She stated.
“All right.” I replied, trying not to laugh at the seriousness in her voice.
We managed to find a JoJo Siwa bow to complete her first day of school outfit and Kiera’s world was complete. Well, she thought it was until the JoJo backpack/lunch box arrived on the doorstep the day before school started.
“I LOVE IT!” She exclaimed holding the pink sparkly backpack with JoJo Siwa’s face emblazoned across it. “Thank you!” She said as she hugged us.
Finally, the first day of school arrived. She was decked out in all her JoJo gear, smiled for the obligatory first day of school picture and kissed us bye before running up the steps to school.
That afternoon, I picked her up from her grandparents’. “How was your first day of school?” I asked.
“It was really good. Maybe a 9 out of 10.” She answered from the back seat of the car.
I continued to quiz her on her day as we drove home. We walked inside and Kiera set her backpack on the table and turned to face me. “Mom.” She stated. “There was one sad thing.”
I looked at her little face, peering up at me. I took a deep breath, preparing for the worst. “Ok, honey. You can always tell me. What happened?”
She looked down at the table for a brief moment, and then looked me straight in the eye. Her face was so serious.
“Remember my notebooks? The ones like JoJo Siwa would have? The one with the golden heart?” She paused taking a breath.
I nodded, waiting to hear if someone had stolen her notebook or imagining what other travesty had befallen the amazing notebooks.
“Well, the only thing sad was that the cute notebooks we got, we had to cover them with a piece of paper that said reading or math. Now, you can’t see the golden heart.”
She shook her head, sadness in her features. “Maybe we can get me another one and I can use it as a diary?”
“Absolutely, baby.” I responded, giving her a swift hug. She smiled in return and the sad part of the day was forgotten… at least until Aaron came home. Then she had to repeat the sad part to him.
