Written by Rowonna McNeely – Saturday as we were out riding around and checking out garage sales, Aaron said, “Aww, that was cute.” I don’t even remember what he was referring to, but I do remember the conversation that followed.
Kiera giggled and piped up from the back, “As cute as me?” She continued to giggle, waiting for her Daddy’s response.
Glancing in the rear view mirror, Aaron smiled and said, “There’s no one as cute as you.”
With a twinkle in her eye, she grinned and quickly responded, “Uh huh…Mommy is.”
I hid a smile and looked at Aaron while I waited for his response.
He glanced in the rear view mirror and met Kiera’s eyes. “Well, she’s almost as cute as you.” He replied.
Take a moment and say “awww” with me. Sweet, huh? This touching moment swiftly ended with Kiera’s retort from the back seat.
“Daddy!” She exclaimed. “It’s almost Mother’s Day and that’s what comes out of your mouth?”
I burst out laughing. Aaron shook his head as he put the truck in park. I think he was probably thankful that he was saved from answering by our arrival at another garage sale.
Mother’s Day morning arrived and I was cuddled up sleeping soundly. All of a sudden, I felt a pressure on my stomach. I opened my eyes to see Kiera laying her head on me.
“Hi, baby.” I mumbled sleepily. I managed to make out the time. It was 7:01 a.m. I rolled over to my side so I could pull her closer.
“Happy Mother’s Day, Mommy.” She said as she cuddled me. It was a perfect moment.
I closed my eyes to savor her closeness and suddenly her head popped up causing my eyes to pop open. “We should go play for Mother’s Day!” She excitedly said. Before I could think of words to form, she was bouncing to the bedroom door. “Come on, Mommy!”
Sleepily, I followed her into the living room. From there I was directed to make a glass of milk and turn on the television. Apparently, in the short distance from the bedroom to the living room, she had decided we could watch a cartoon together.
Just as I started to sit down, Aaron appeared. “Go back to bed.” He urged.
Kiera smiled at me as she said, “I’ll watch this cartoon with Daddy. You can go back to sleep.”
I didn’t have to be told twice. I kissed both of them, climbed in bed and promptly fell back asleep.
An hour later, I woke up to a soft voice saying, “Mom. Mommy. It’s time to wake up. I have your Mother’s Day gift.”
I opened my eyes to see Kiera’s sweet face peering at me and over her shoulder was her Daddy with an apologetic smile. “I held her off as long as I could.” He said.
Smiling, I replied, “It’s perfectly fine.”
“Here, Mommy! This is what I made!” Kiera waved her homemade card at me.
Looking at the two of them as they smiled at me, I couldn’t imagine a better way to start the day.
So, to each of you, whether you are a mom, or even a dad who fills in as one, whether you are a nurturer that does not have children, but fills a void for so many, and to those that I might have missed, I hope you each had a blessed day.
