I write to applaud communities in Brown County for actively participating in Red Ribbon Week 2010.  It was a very successful week of awareness and education on the dangers of illegal drugs.  My organization, the Prevention Resource Center (PRC), was invited to give tobacco presentations in Brookesmith and Brownwood, and we also provided promotional supplies for dozens of schools in the county.  Along with token “red ribbons,” we supplied activity booklets, bookmarks, stickers, bracelets, pencils, and posters to increase awareness among the counties’ youth about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

It was such a positive experience for all of us at the PRC – and I am so grateful to have been a part of the events for Brown County.  Children in the schools (especially Northwest Elementary) were excited to add their own creativity to the week’s events, creating their own posters about living drug free.  Brookesmith ISD even put on an information session for parents, in which the PRC was privileged to educate parents on dangerous drug trends among America’s youth.  Superintendent Bryan Swartz was in attendance as well for support.

Thank you to everyone in the county who worked so tirelessly to make Red Ribbon Week 2010 so successful.  From superintendents to teachers, from parents to students – it is so reassuring to know that knowledge is spreading about living the healthiest lifestyle; a lifestyle which is DRUG FREE!

Editor’s Note:  Other schools may not have been mentioned in the above letter; however, many participated throughout Brown County hosting educational and fun activities for the students regarding drug awareness.  For that, BrownwoodNews salutes all participating schools in helping our children of Brown County make healthy choices for a betterlife.
