According to Brownwood Police Assistant Chief James Fuller, officers have seen a rash of car burglaries within the city in the last several days and they have taken on a new form, often known as “smash and grab,” burglaries.
Just this week, there were at least nine such burglaries in the area, 8 in Brownwood and one in the county. Most of these took place during the overnight hours. One was in broad daylight, while the owner of the vehicle was shopping at a local store.
In the past, Fuller has warned the public to keep their doors locked and valuables out of sight. However, this past week has seen several instances where burglars are smashing car windows in search of valuables. Most cases involved valuables in plain sight, however, there were some where vehicle windows were damaged and nothing was taken.
Fuller stated that the best protection is to remove valuables when you exit the vehicle.
“The importance of hiding your items can’t be overstated,” said Fuller. “If you don’t have something in there to steal, the likelihood of a burglary is lessened.”
Fuller stated that these crimes are being investigated and that police ask the public to help by being aware and reporting suspicious activity.
“These crimes also demonstrate the importance if you hear or see something strange, call police,” encouraged Fuller. “Be aware. ‘Neighbors looking after neighbors’ is a good slogan to take up.”
