LECSmA Brownwood man was arrested after he allegedly struck a pedestrian at a local convenience store and then fled the scene Monday night, according to law enforcement officials.

According to police reports, 64-year-old Johnny Lee Strickland was driving a black Dodge pickup when he struck a clerk at the Allsup’s convenience store, located at 910 Early Blvd in Early, at approximately 10:12pm and then fled the scene.

A license plate number was provided and Strickland was located at his home on 6th Street in Brownwood shortly after the incident where he was found to be intoxicated, police said.  Strickland was arrested by Brownwood Police officers for Driving While Intoxicated.  Strickland provided a blood specimen as evidence and was transported to the Brown County Jail.

Early Police Chief David Mercer said that when the clerk was struck, she landed on Strickland’s pickup and clung to it for a short while; beating on it and yelling for him to stop until she fell off of the truck, going underneath the vehicle.

Mercer stated that the clerk declined transport to the emergency room at the time; however, Tuesday morning she reported an increased amount of pain and went to see her own doctor for evaluation of her injuries.  Mercer stated that the clerk was “very lucky.”

Mercer said that Strickland will face an additional charge of felony failure to stop and render aid for the hit and run of the clerk.
