Brownwood Police are searching for a man who fled after police responded to a possible accident early Saturday morning. The man is described as being in his 20s, black skin, possibly 5’5” to 5’8” in height, weighing 135-160 pounds and wearing a white muscle shirt and blue jean shorts.
According to Brownwood Police Department, an officer was dispatched at 2:49am after reporting parties advised they heard what they thought sounded like a vehicle crashing into something. The officer stated that as he arrived in the area, he heard a noise that sounded like a vehicle’s tire rubbing against something hard. As he turned down Slayden, he believed he was getting closer and turned into the Camelot apartments where he found a black male talking on a cell phone and standing at the back area of a vehicle near the basketball court of the complex. The officer approached the man and asked him what he was doing and the man stated that he was changing a tire, the report states.
As the officer walked to the passenger side of the car he noted damage to the right front quarter panel of the vehicle, the report states. When the officer asked about the damage, the man fled the scene, leading the officer in a foot chase across a nearby open field, outrunning the officer and escaping.
After searching the vehicle for clues to why the male would have fled, officers found nothing suspicious inside the vehicle which would have given the suspect a motive to flee from the officer, the report states. After checking the vehicle’s identifiers, it was found that the vehicle was allegedly stolen while the owner was asleep. The owner admitted that he usually leaves the vehicle unlocked and that he had left the keys in it. He stated that he only uses the vehicle as transportation to and from work and that it is in poor condition.
Further investigation led to the discovery of a black Ford Mustang, parked in the 2300 block of 4th Street, which was believed to have been struck by the suspect’s vehicle and having damage to its driver’s side which was consistent with being side swiped. At the request of the owner of the Mustang, several criminal charges have been filed.
BPD is continuing their investigation and is actively searching for the suspect. Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to call the Brownwood Police at 325-646-2525.
