LECSmBrownwood/Brown County Communications Division received an anonymous call on Thursday evening, August 18th which provided information that a shipment of illegal narcotics would be entering the Brownwood area.

Brownwood Police Department reported that the call came in around 6 p.m. and stated that a male, who was currently in a community in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, would be transporting a large amount of marijuana to the Brownwood area by motor vehicle.

According to the report, a coordinated effort to locate the vehicle was made and a traffic stop was eventually initiated by Sergeant Stephanie Morgan of the Brownwood Police Department.  The driver was identified as 33-year-old Douglas Williams of Brownwood.

During the course of the investigation, Early Police Department K9 Jambo alerted to the vehicle and a large amount of suspected marijuana was recovered, according to police.  The value of the recovered narcotics is estimated to be in excess of $3000, according to BPD officials.  Williams was subsequently arrested for the offense of possession of marijuana between 4 ounces and 5 pounds.

Brownwood Police Department Narcotics Detective Aaron Taylor, Brown County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Investigators Carlisle Gover and John Harper, Early Police Department Detective Billy Bloom and EPD Corporal Brandon McMillian assisted Sgt. Morgan in this coordinated effort.

“As one team, our area law enforcement agencies will continue to safeguard our community against illegal narcotic traffickers,” said Brownwood Assistant Chief James Fuller.  “We are thankful for the community support and encourage anyone with information on illegal activity to report the information to your local agency.”

Wednesday, August 17

*8:47 AM – Brownwood Police were dispatched to the 1500 block of Terrace Drive regarding the unauthorized use/theft of a motor vehicle.

*10:31 AM – Brownwood Police were called to the 1500 block of Beaver Street regarding the theft of a bicycle.

*1:43 PM – Brownwood Police were called to the intersection of Dallas and Sycamore Street regarding a found bicycle.  According to the report, the bicycle was taken for safe keeping to the Brownwood Police Department.

*2:10 PM – Brownwood Police were dispatched to the 2000 block of Main Blvd. regarding the burglary of a building.  According to the report, a gaming system, games and hand tools were stolen from the property.

Thursday, August 18

*9:16 AM – Brownwood Police were dispatched to the 300 block of Market Place Blvd. regarding the theft of a motor vehicle.

*11:03 AM – Brownwood Police were dispatched to the 400 block of Fisk Street regarding fraud.

*11:26 AM – Brownwood Police were called to the 300 block of Bluffview Drive regarding theft.

*12:43 PM – Brownwood Police were called to the 1500 block of Terrace Drive regarding an unwanted person.  According to the report, as a result of this call, 45-year-old Alfredo Vasquez, Jr. was arrested for criminal trespass and criminal mischief less than $100 for breaking a window at the complainant’s apartment.

*2:11 PM – Brownwood Police were dispatched to the 4500 block of Delwood Drive regarding the burglary of a motor vehicle.  According to the report, possible suspects have been identified.

*5:00 PM – Brownwood Police met with a complainant at the law enforcement center regarding two counterfeit bills which were passed at a local business.  According to the report, a $20 and a $100 bill were determined to be counterfeit and a suspect has been determined.

*8:27 PM – A Brownwood Police officer observed a small pickup truck make a traffic violation and initiated a traffic stop near the 1300 block of Avenue A and 2nd Street.  According to the report, the officer noticed the odor of marijuana coming from the inside of the vehicle.  Although the driver, identified as 37-year-old Marcus Mares, denied having marijuana in his possession, he stated that he had smoked it earlier in the day.  Mares gave the officer consent to search the vehicle and as another officer approached to assist in the situation, Mares began to run toward the approaching officer, the report states.  In fear that he was planning to assault the assisting officer, the first officer grabbed Mares by the arm and an altercation ensued, according to the report.  One of the officers tased Mares and the taser probe became dislodged, Mares swung his arm and struck one of the officers in the nose, the report states.  The injured officer tried to tase Mares again; however, he attempted to flee but the other officer and a civilian were able to stop Mares and secure him on the ground.  During the struggle with the assisting officer, Mares attempted to take the officer’s firearm, the report states.  Mares continued to struggle with the officer and was tased again, then secured into a police vehicle, the report states.  The search of Mares’ vehicle was continued and resulted in the discovery of 0.9 grams of marijuana, under the driver’s seat of the vehicle, according to the report.  The location of the arrest was less than 1000 feet from the Brownwood Intermediate School.  Mares was arrested for possession of marijuana less than 2 ounces in a drug free zone, evading arrest/detention, resisting arrest, assault of a public servant and for attempting to take a weapon from a police officer.  The passenger of the vehicle was released from the scene.
