MatthewsCollinBrown County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a disturbance Thursday afternoon which led to the arrest of a Brownwood man on multiple charges of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and other charges.

According to BCSO Patrol Sergeant John Fincher, the disturbance developed when 30-year-old Collin David Matthews borrowed a truck from the complainant for what was supposed to be a few hours and did not bring it back after four days.  The complainant, her 16-year-old son and a friend went to retrieve the vehicle from Matthews and an argument ensued, stated Fincher.  Matthews allegedly was yelling and pointed a 9mm hand gun at all three, according to BCSO officials.  As the complainant, her son and friend left the scene of the disturbance, she called law enforcement Fincher said.

Matthews ran to a mobile home of a neighbor and attempted to hide the gun in a back bedroom according to Fincher.  The neighbor stated that he and his son had just woken from a nap when Matthews came into the house asking for a drink of water, according to the report.  Matthews lives in a camper trailer which does not have running water but that is located on the property of this neighbor, said Fincher.

Deputies asked for consent to search the mobile home, which was granted, and found the gun hidden in a chair in the back bedroom, said Fincher.

According to Fincher, the situation could have turned out much differently.

“This very easily could have turned out a lot worse, as the gun was found with one round chambered and a fully loaded 15 round clip attached,” said Fincher.

Matthews was arrested and charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by Felon.
