Brownwood Police responded to a two-vehicle accident Thursday night which sent a woman to the hospital and another driver to jail for allegedly driving drunk.
The accident occurred at approximately 10:15pm Thursday night as Juan Ugarte was traveling in a pickup west in the center lane and attempted to turn into the 7-11 in the 500 block of E. Commerce. According to the accident report, Ugarte turned his Dodge 1500 pickup in front of the other vehicle causing the collision with a Pontiac Sunfire which was headed east in the outside lane.
According to Lt. Tracy Delgado of Brownwood Police Department, Ugarte had fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival; however items within the vehicle he left at the scene helped to identify him as the driver. During the investigation, an acquaintance of Ugarte approached police and stated that he knew where Ugarte was and that he would go to get the suspect and bring him back to the scene, according to Lt. Delgado. The acquaintance did bring Ugarte back to the scene where he admitted to being the driver of the Dodge 1500 pickup and that he was driving under the influence, said Delgado.
Because the accident resulted in injury to the woman, a blood specimen was ordered to confirm that Ugarte was Driving While Intoxicated. Ugarte was placed under arrest for DWI-1st offense and Failure to Stop and Render Aid, which is a felony offense according to Delgado.
Authorities said that the woman was transported to Brownwood Regional Medical Center for non-incapacitating injuries.
