A local man was arrested after he failed to appear in court on drug related charges and had been hiding from law enforcement for several days, according to Brown County Sheriff’s Office.
According to BCSO Captain Vance Hill, 33-year-old Chad Cooper had appeared before the court and had made an attempt to fire his attorney last Thursday morning, a request the judge denied. Cooper was ordered by the judge to return for his trial after lunch that day; however he failed to appear.
Cooper had been one of 45 defendants named in the July 2014 “Operation Tangled Web,” drug roundup in Brown County. Cooper was arrested on charges at the time of engaging in organized criminal activity, possession of a control substance in a drug free zone, and unlawful possession of firearm by felon according to Brown County Jail records.
Hill stated that a warrant was issued for Cooper’s arrest and on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 BCSO investigators along with the assistance of a Brownwood Police Department narcotics officer, began searching for Cooper in a neighborhood near Coggin Park. Cooper had been hiding out in the 2300 block of Elizabeth on Wednesday and had broken into a home on Durham where it appeared he had stolen some clothes, according to Hill.
Deputy Brian Lundy was able to taze Cooper during the chase and took him into custody on the warrant for failure to appear and surety warrants related to his original charges, said Hill. Cooper will face additional charges of evading arrest and burglary of a habitation, according to Hill.
