A Brownwood man involved in a hit and run accident was jailed after allegedly fleeing from police and nearly running over an officer early Saturday night, according to Brownwood Police.
At approximately 11:45 p.m. Saturday, April 4th, Brownwood Police were called to the intersection of Cordell Street and W. Austin Avenue regarding a hit and run. According to the report, the complainant had followed the suspect vehicle until police began chasing the suspect down an alley behind LaMonte Drive.
The responding officer followed the green pickup down the alley with emergency lights activated attempting to stop the vehicle, the report states. The driver, later identified as 42-year-old Gregory Travis Lundy, eventually struck a tree and came to a stop, refusing to exit the vehicle as the officer commanded him, according to the report.
The officer noticed the suspect trying to get to something under the middle of the seat, so he drew his gun and pointed it at the subject as he commanded him to exit the vehicle or he would break the window, the report states. When the window would not break, the officer walked to the rear of the vehicle and tried to approach the driver’s side which was blocked by brush and other trees. The driver then put the vehicle in reverse and the officer lunged to the side of the vehicle, missing being struck by the vehicle as it once again fled the scene, according to the report. The driver continued down the alley and turned onto LaMonte Street where he again lost control of the vehicle, swerving and striking numerous mailboxes on both sides of the roadway, the report states. The vehicle finally came to a stop when it pulled into a driveway in the 1000 block of LaMonte and the driver exited, running on foot to the rear of the house, where officers took him into custody after a brief struggle.Lundy was arrested and charged with aggravated assault against a public servant, evading arrest with vehicle, resist arrest/search/transport, evading arrest detention, and duty on striking unattended vehicle less than $200. Lundy was taken to the Brown County Jail where he was being held in lieu of bonds totaling $66,500 as of Monday morning.
