A Ballinger man was hospitalized being involved in four wrecks involving 5 vehicles on Saturday evening.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Clint Hounshell, a 72-year-old man from Ballinger was traveling eastbound on Hwy 67 toward Bangs, when he drifted into the westbound lanes of traffic.  He was about to hit a pickup head-on but both vehicles were able to come to a stop before they collided; however, when the driver of the other vehicle got out to see what happened, the elderly driver “plowed into the other vehicle” pushing it across the roadway and into a pasture, said Hounshell.

The driver of the vehicle was standing in the roadway when the elderly driver left the scene.  The driver of the other vehicle was picked up by another driver, who then followed the suspect.

The elderly driver then continued to travel on the wrong side of the roadway toward Bangs, where he hit a speed limit sign, traveled through a front yard and then made a full circle and left Bangs, once again traveling on the wrong side of the roadway, Hounshell reported.  The elderly driver nearly struck the vehicle of the woman who had picked up the victim of his first collision; however, she managed to swerve, striking another vehicle, so that the elderly driver would not strike the side of the vehicle where her 4-year-old child was sitting, said Hounshell.

Trooper Hounshell stated that the woman did a good job, although she struck another vehicle, avoiding possible injury to her child.

The elderly driver again continued down the roadway where he hit two other vehicles and then struck a fence in two spots and traveled across County Road 173 where he struck a third fence.

Emergency responders were called to the pasture on County Road 173 where the elderly driver had finally come to a stop.  They found him coming in and out of consciousness and he was transported to the hospital for treatment, later released that night.

The speed he was traveling during the accidents was unknown according to Hounshell who stated that preliminary evaluations did not show the elderly driver was having any medical problem at the time of the accident, but alcohol was believed to be a factor in the accidents.  Currently charges of Driving While Intoxicated are pending, said Hounshell, but no arrests have been made.
