Brownwood Police served a warrant for a parole violation Friday afternoon in the 2500 block of Waco Street which led to additional charges being filed on 25-year-old John Raymond Wilkerson of Brownwood.
According to the report, Officer Robert Lee arrived at the residence and was given permission to enter the residence where Wilkerson was found in the closet of the children’s bedroom of the house. As Wilkerson exited the closet, he asked if he could put his shoes on; however the officer told him he could in a moment, advising him he was under arrest for the warrant, the report states.
Wilkerson then struck the officer with an open hand in the chest, jerked free from the officer and ran toward the front door of the residence in an attempt to get away, the officer reported. As he was trying to get out the front door and eventually onto the deck, Wilkerson and the officer struggled. Another officer, Cpl. Kenyon Black, arrived to assist and struck Wilkerson in the upper arm with his baton. When this blow had no effect on Wilkerson, who continued to struggle with Officer Lee, Cpl. Black aimed his taser at Wilkerson’s lower back. Although aiming at his back, Wilkerson moved as the taser deployed, causing the taser’s prongs to lodge in the back of the suspect’s head, according to the report.
Wilkerson was immediately placed on the deck and the prongs removed from the back of his head. He began to convulse while lying on the ground, the report states. Guardian EMS was called to location and the officers checked the suspect’s pulse and breathing, which were both found to be normal, the report states. Wilkerson was unconscious and unresponsive for approximately one to two minutes, according to the report.
Once Wilkerson regained consciousness, he was advised not to move so that he could be checked by Guardian. He was transported to Brownwood Regional Medical Center where he remained for several hours for evaluation to ensure his health, the report states.
Wilkerson was charged and arrested for Resisting Arrest, Assault on a Public Servant, and the Parole Warrant out of Austin Parole Division.
Officer Lee sustained multiple scratches on both of his forearms, along with bruising on the inside of his left wrist, the report states.
Later, a family member of Wilkerson’s called Brownwood Police Department to advise that Wilkerson routinely suffers from seizures, the report states.
