Two men were arrested after they were found to be intoxicated and in possession of items stolen from parked cars in the Wal-Mart Parking lot on Sunday afternoon, according to Brownwood Police reports.

Police responded to a report of suspicious activity in the Wal-Mart parking lot at approximately 3:15pm. According to witnesses, the suspects were seen stealing items out of vehicles parked in the lot.

According to the report, as officers arrived, the men, later identified as 44-year-old Ronnie Lee Patterson and 40-year-old William Joe Bailey, left the parking lot and were eventually stopped by Brownwood Police for a traffic violation.  During the stop, the driver put the suspect truck into reverse nearly striking the patrol unit.  Off duty Brown County Constable Jim Byars witnessed the men taking the items from the back of a vehicle at Wal-Mart and was also following the suspect vehicle.

Once stopped, Patterson was asked for his driver’s license and handed a license belonging to another person to the officer; the name on the license matched the registered owner of the truck, the report states.  According to the report, Patterson told the officer that he worked for the owner of the truck as a bail bondsman and he could call her and get everything resolved.  Patterson was found to have Texas Identification Card only and an Alabama driver’s license which was suspended for Driving Under the Influence and Failure to Appear, police reports state.

According to the report, both occupants of the truck stated they were at Wal-Mart to buy flowers. When asked where they had been parked, neither could remember, stating they had been somewhere near the garden center of the store.  Investigation determined that Patterson and Bailey were both intoxicated, the report states.  Patterson admitted taking hydrocodone and Xanax at approximately one hour after drinking beer; Bailey stated that he had also been drinking beer that day, according to the report.

Patterson told police that he was a bounty hunter and a bail bondsman, the report states.

Review of Wal-Mart’s surveillance video showed the men removing property from vehicles within the lot and placing it in the trailer they were pulling, reports state. When questioned about one of the objects, a new toilet, the men stated that they thought it was a television. Additional reports of a theft at Home Depot revealed that the men had also taken items from a vehicle at that location as well, police reports state.

According to the report, items stolen included hardware, a Round-up sprayer, a toilet seat and miscellaneous tools. A cigarette carton was located which contained three bottles of prescription medication which were found and were not prescribed to either Patterson or Bailey, the report states.

Both men were arrested. Patterson was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, 2 counts of Burglary of a Vehicle and Possession of a Dangerous Drug. Bailey was charged with Public Intoxication, 2 counts of Burglary of a Vehicle and Possession of a Dangerous Drug.
