A man claiming to be homeless was arrested outside of Wal-Mart in Brownwood after burglarizing a vehicle Thursday.
According to the report, at approximately 1:24 PM the male, later identified as 20-year-old Michael Bass, had been seen by witnesses “checking parked vehicles out.” Bass had been described as a tall male wearing an orange hat attempting to break into vehicles.
The responding officer noted that dispatch gave the above description of the male which the officer was familiar with as he had been dispatched to the location for the same complaints earlier in the day, around 10:45 AM. As he arrived in the Wal-Mart parking lot, the officer was flagged down by a witness who pointed out a dark colored Oldsmobile and stated that the suspect was inside the vehicle, the report states. As the officer approached the vehicle, Bass, wearing an orange hat, opened the driver’s side door, and attempted to avoid the officer by leaving the scene, walking northbound toward a wooden fence, according to the report. The officer commanded him to stop, place his hands behind his head and lay face down on the ground.According to the report, the suspect told the officer, “All I took was some change and lottery tickets.” He explained that he was looking to break into vehicles as he just got into town and was hungry, claiming he had not eaten in a few days and was homeless, the report states. Bass quickly pulled out the change, about a dollar worth of coins and the lottery tickets, from his pockets and placed them on the ground.
The victim vehicle was identified and the owner was paged to come outside to meet with the officer. The owner of the vehicle did wish to pursue criminal charges against Bass for the burglary. Bass was subsequently arrested and charged for the burglary of a vehicle.
