LeonardJerryBrownwood Police arrested a Brownwood man Wednesday for allegedly stabbing his wife early Tuesday morning.

31-year-old Jerry Leonard was located in a Brownwood apartment just one day after he had allegedly stabbed his wife in the arm after a verbal argument that turned physical, police said Thursday.

Police responded to the 1700 block of 3rd Street early Tuesday morning where they met with the victim who stated that she  had been at a friend’s apartment doing laundry until early in the morning and had gotten into an argument which escalated to the stabbing, the report states.

She reported that she had become tired and attempted to leave, which made Leonard very angry.  As she attempted to leave in her car, Leonard allegedly tried to take her keys and when unsuccessful, he then brandished a large Bowie knife which he allegedly used to stab her in the arm.  The stab wound was deep enough to expose fatty tissue of the arm, and the victim was taken to Brownwood Regional Medical Center by Guardian EMS ambulance.  Leonard left the scene in a pickup.  Police located Leonard Wednesday around 3:30 p.m.

According to the report, Wednesday afternoon Brownwood Police investigators were searching the area behind the residence in the 1700 block of 3rd Street where the stabbing had occurred when one of the officers heard a male’s voice state “the cops are walking around,” which seemed to be coming from the bathroom of the apartment of a friend of the suspect.

Another officer arrived on scene and kept an eye on the back of the building while the first officer talked to the resident, then he came to the front of the home to help search the house for Leonard.  As the two officers searched the house, they  asked the resident if Leonard was in the bathroom and she stated, “no,” while giving a wink to the officers who then checked the bathroom, observing it to be unoccupied; however, the window screen was off and laying on the ground underneath the window.   Knowing that Leonard had escaped through the bathroom window, the officers began looking in the immediate area with no success.

The resident provided a clothing description and officers later received information that Leonard had gone to the Good Shepherd Apartments.  Although no one answered the officers knocking on the front door of the apartment, they could see two subjects inside the apartment.   The officers noted that one of the subject’s clothing matched that of the suspect.

A third officer arrived and advised that Leonard was attempting to exit the back window of the apartment and that he had gone back inside.

The resident of the apartment then opened the front door and Leonard was observed standing next to her.  He was ordered to the ground and placed under arrest for the warrant related to assault with a deadly weapon family violence (for the stabbing), and resisting arrest/detention with previous convictions.  Leonard is being held at the Brown County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.
