Steven Herron | Nicona Dean |
Sergeant Shawn Dibrell with the Early Police Department was at a local convenience store at approximately 2:45am on Sunday, January 22, in plain clothes going off duty when he observed a female acting strangely as if she were “high,” according to EPD Chief David Mercer. Sgt. Dibrell called a marked unit that was in the area; however the vehicle left before he could detain a suspect at the time. The other EPD officer, Cpl. Means, was able to stop the vehicle a couple of blocks away.
Occupants of the vehicle included a male and female along with an 8-year- old girl. As Cpl. Means approached the vehicle, the female passenger took a baggie and tried to hide it, Mercer said. Once officers made contact, these individuals were questioned and later the vehicle was searched. Officers located several small baggies of methamphetamines, marijuana, scales and a loaded syringe, Mercer said.
The child was released to CPS custody and both the driver 37-year-old Steven Herron and 36-year-old Nicona Dean, both from Abilene, were arrested. Dean was charged with Possession of Marijuana and Tampering with Evidence and Herron with Possession of Controlled Substance in a Drug Free Zone, Possession of Marijuana in a Drug Free Zone and Child Endangerment.
Initially, Herron gave a false name and date of birth to police and was later properly identified. He is additionally charged with failure to identify for giving the false name and date of birth to Early Police Department.
