Early Police Department received a call of a reckless driver on Highway 377 east of Early traveling toward Early on Monday, December 21st.
According to the report, a caller reported a white 18-wheeler truck weaving from lane to lane and almost running off the road occasionally. EPD Sergeant Steven Means located the truck and observed the erratic driving. Sgt. Means attempted to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle did not stop for several miles, the report states. The truck eventually stopped in the 600 block of Early Blvd, and when the driver was questioned about his driving, he appeared to be sluggish in his responses, sweating and somewhat dazed, according to the report.
The driver, 48-year-old Joseph Calhoun, Jr. from Rockville Center, New York stated he was a diabetic and would be fine after he rested. Early Volunteer Fire Department responded and checked Calhoun but blood sugar was normal, the report states.
Texas Department of Public Safety was requested to conduct an inspection on the truck and further investigation revealed an open container of alcohol in the cab of the truck and a crack pipe with a small amount of crack cocaine in the pipe, according to the report. It appeared the driver had been smoking the crack cocaine while driving the truck and attempted to hide the pipe while he was not stopping for the officer behind him, the report states.
Calhoun was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated and a search warrant for a blood sample was obtained from Judge Sam Moss. The driver was take to Brownwood Regional Medical Center’s emergency room for the blood sample and then booked into the Brown County Jail for DWI and possession of drug paraphernalia. The suspected crack cocaine residue will be submitted to the DPS lab for analysis and a warrant for possession of controlled substance will be sought after results from the lab are received, according to Early Chief of Police David Mercer.Other unrelated law enforcement arrests and reports released Tuesday, December 22, 2015.
