An early Sunday morning traffic stop led to drug related arrests and a charge of endangering a child, according to law enforcement.
Early Police Department Officer Stephanie Brown stopped a vehicle pulling a trailer with no taillights in the 300 block of Early Blvd at approximately 4:45 a.m. on Sunday, January 19th. The driver identified as 44-year-old Charles Burton Watson and passenger 20-year-old Rayla Dawn Rice both of Coleman stated they were moving from a house on Northline Drive in Early to Coleman, the report states.
According to the Early Chief of Police David Mercer, Rice and Watson appeared very nervous while talking to officers who questioned why the couple was moving during the middle of the night and why they were so nervous. Officers obtained permission to search the vehicle and offered Rice a warm place to sit in a patrol car while she and her 3-year-old son waited, Mercer reported. When Rice was moving into the patrol car, she dropped two plastic zip-lock baggies containing what later field tested positive as methamphetamine. Rice admitted to removing the meth while getting out of the vehicle so officers wouldn’t find it; however, she dropped it while trying to put her son in the patrol car, according to the report.
Other drug paraphernalia including a glass smoking pipe and dirty syringes were located in the vehicle and on Rice and Watson’s person, Mercer said. Both Rice and Watson were arrested; Watson was charged with possession of a controlled substance penalty group 1 less than 1 gram and abandon/endanger child criminal negligence, while Rice was charged with possession of controlled substance and tampering with evidence.
The 3-year-old child was released to Child Protective Services caseworkers who responded to the scene.
