Brownwood Police arrested a woman for Driving While Intoxicated after she was found to be driving erratically in the area of East Elementary around 9:00pm Monday night.

A Brownwood Police officer was flagged down regarding a possible accident and went to the 1000 block of Idlewild where he saw a tan minivan in the middle of the roadway doing donuts while in reverse, the police report states.  After observing about 4 donuts, the officer states in the report that he was able to see that the driver was female and that she was looking right at him while her van was in motion, narrowly missing his patrol car.  The van then came to a stop for a short time, then began driving forward, turned on Vincent Street behind the school knocking down a school speed limit sign, and continued bouncing from curb to curb, the report states.   The officer further described in the report that the driver continued through the park area in front of the school, hitting and knocking down one tree and barely missing other trees, utility poles, and finally came to rest between two cinderblock buildings at the baseball field at the corner of Roanoke and Austin Avenue.

According to the officer’s report, he repeatedly told the woman to exit the vehicle, and eventually pulled her out of the vehicle and took her into custody.  While speaking to the driver, identified as 46-year-old Angela Sue Harwell, the officer found that it was “apparent she was incoherent and was not aware of what had just occurred.”  The officer asked why she had driven the way she did; however the report states that she was “confused and was unaware of her surroundings or anything else which had just occurred.”

Due to the woman’s condition, the officer called Guardian EMS to check Harwell.  According to the report, EMS evaluation suggested Harwell might be under the influence of an unknown narcotic.  Based on this information, the officer determined that Harwell did not evade arrest and was unaware that she had driven off from police due to being under the influence of some unknown drug, according to the officer’s report.

According to police, Harwell had six prescription bottles in her purse which were taken as evidence.  Two of the bottles were empty; the others contained numerous pills.

Harwell submitted to a blood specimen and after assessment by the hospital staff, she was transported to the Brown County Jail.

Harwell later told BrownwoodNews.com that the incident was likely tied to a medical condition.
