According to Brown County Sheriff’s Office, neighbors who heard a loud sound shortly after midnight Saturday called police when they saw a man break into both Gary Edwards’ Garage and Big G’s Grocery which resulted in the arrest of a 26-year-old Brownwood Man.
Brown County Sheriff’s Deputies along with a Department of Public Safety Trooper helped apprehend a suspect who admitted to the burglaries. DPS Trooper Clint Hounshell was the first on scene and was able to take the suspect into custody. After being read his Miranda rights, 26-year-old Corey Lance Stephens agreed to talk to law enforcement and admitted that he had been drinking Friday night and confessed to taking an ax and a buck knife from the garage to break a door and make entry into the back of the grocery store, reports state. The suspect stated that the door to the garage was unlocked and law enforcement found no sign of forced entry.
Stephens also confessed to taking three cartons of cigarettes which, according to the grocery store manager, appeared to be the only property stolen from the store during the incident. BCSO reports indicate that the ax was found next to the grocery store door as Stephens described, confirming witnesses’ accounts of the incident. The owner of the garage as well as the management and owner of Big G’s Grocery both stated that they wished to pursue charges against Stephens, who did not have permission to enter either business.
Stephens was arrested and charged with two counts of Burglary of a Building – A State Jail Felony.

Friday, October 21
*1:55pm-Brownwood Police were dispatched to the 1100 block of Vine Street regarding a theft in progress. According to the report, the complainant gave a description of a female who attempted to steal Halloween decorations that were located in the complainant’s yard. The officer was able to locate a woman who fit the description of the suspect and was identified as 25-year-old Darlene Frias. Frias admitted to the theft and also admitted to stealing clothing several items of clothing from the Family Dollar Store on Austin Avenue, the report states. Frias was arrested and charged with two counts of theft: Theft of Property Greater than $50 Less than $500 for the Halloween decorations and Theft Less than $50 regarding the clothing.
*5:11pm-Brownwood Police were called to the 1400 block of Belle Plain regarding the theft of metal.
*11:06pm-A Brownwood Police officer initiated a traffic stop in the area of Broadway and C. C. Woodson. According to the report, the driver of the pickup, identified as 65-year-old Denver James Way, Jr., was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated 3rd or More. The passenger, identified as 40-year-old Denver James Way, III, was placed under arrest for Public Intoxication.
*3:49pm-Brownwood Police received a report of forgery. According to the report, the complainant stated that approximately 5 months ago, he had a box of checks stolen from the closet of his residence in the 600 block of 3rd Street. The complainant closed the checking account approximately 4 months ago after he became concerned that someone may attempt to use the checks and has not reported the checks stolen until this date, the report states.
*10:16pm-Brownwood Police responded to the 1700 block of Waco Street regarding a citizen’s dispute. According to the report, the complainant stated that she was assaulted by her sister’s boyfriend.
Saturday, October 22
*12:33am-Brownwood Police were called to the 1000 block of Vincent regarding an intoxicated driver. According to police, an investigation determined that the subject, identified as 35-year-old Bobby James Crouch, was found to be extremely intoxicated and was in a public place and a danger to himself; therefore, he was arrested on the charge of Public Intoxication.
*2:20am-Brownwood Police responded to the 3400 block of Golding Road regarding a domestic dispute. According to the report, the complainant stated that the father of her child had forced his way into the residence and pushed and pulled her in an effort to try to take their young child. The complainant stated that the suspect took her cell phone from her as she tried to call police for help, the report states. According to police, the male suspect was located several blocks away and stated that he had been invited into the residence and that the child’s mother had struck him in the head. The incident is still under investigation.
*2:41pm-Brownwood Police were called to the 200 block of E. Commerce, regarding a possible DUI (Driving Under the Influence) driver in the parking lot of Chili’s Restaurant. According to the report, as the officer was en route, dispatch advised him that the occupants of the black 4-door pickup were sitting inside the vehicle with the doors open. The officer was able to locate the vehicle and its occupants who were found to be intoxicated, the report states. The occupants were identified as 44-year-old James Clifford Waddell of Cross Plains, 39-year-old Todd Dean Perry of San Antonio, 54-year-old Jed David Pointer of Cross Plains, and 51-year-old Sabrina Hutchins Price. All occupants were arrested for Public Intoxication and Waddell, who was identified as the owner of the vehicle, was given an additional charge of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
*5:41pm-Brownwood Police were called to the 2200 block of Avenue E regarding a hit and run accident in the alley behind one of the odd numbered homes in the 2200 block of Avenue E. According to initial reports, a small truck hit a fence and continued driving without stopping. Upon officers’ arrival, they noted a gas line had also been struck and was leaking natural gas, the report states. Officers were able to locate the suspect vehicle and driver at a nearby residence. 21-year-old Megan Joe Regino of San Angelo was arrested for Fleeing the Scene of an Accident greater than $200.
*7:10pm-Brownwood Police were dispatched to the 1700 block of 3rd Street regarding criminal mischief. According to the report, the complainant stated that a known subject had slashed a tire on her pickup.
*9:52pm-A Brownwood Police officer made a traffic stop in the 1300 block of 2nd Street which resulted in the arrest of 25-year-old Veronica Ortega for Driving While License Invalid. According to the report, the driver had a license which was suspended with S/R surcharge due.
*Brownwood Police arrested 56-year-old Ronnie Gene McGraw for Assault Family Violence.
*Texas Department of Public Safety arrested 55-year-old Gary Dale Mitchell for Driving While Intoxicated 3rd or More.
*Brownwood Police arrested 44-year-old Jesse Luna Pesina, Jr. for Driving While Intoxicated 2nd.
*Texas Department of Public Safety arrested 19-year-old Taylor Scott Snow for Driving While Intoxicated/Open Alcohol Container.
Sunday, October 23
*1:33am-A Brownwood Police officer made a traffic stop in the 600 block of Idlewild. According to the report, an investigation determined that the driver, identified as 51-year-old Mario Armando Ramirez, was intoxicated. Ramirez refused a blood specimen and a warrant was signed by Judge Griffin to obtain the specimen the report states. Ramirez was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and his vehicle was released to a family member.
*7:20am-A Brownwood Police officer was parked in the 1900 block of US Hwy 377 observing traffic when he noticed a pickup travelling south, well over the posted speed limit of 40mph. According to the officer’s report, the radar was activated and the driver’s speed to be 52 in a 40mph zone. The stop led to the arrest of 50-year-old Alex Lucky Gil for Driving While Intoxicated 2nd.
*10:16am-Brownwood Police were called to the 2200 block of Elizabeth regarding theft. According to the report, the complainant stated that she had left her zebra print purse along with matching wallet and checkbook case in her vehicle overnight, the report states. The vehicle was left unlocked and someone stole the purse and its contents from inside the vehicle, according to the report.
*2:50pm-Brownwood Police received a report via telephone of criminal mischief. According to the report, the complainant reported that someone had turned on a faucet on his property in the 900 block of Goodwin Street and left it running. The complainant stated that it may have been teenagers just doing this for fun, but that it was going to cost him an unknown amount of money and he would like to pursue charges if a suspect is identified, the report states.
*Texas Department of Public Safety arrested 29-year-old Adrian Seth Finch for Driving While License Invalid with Previous Convictions.
*Texas Department of Public Safety arrested 35-year-old Ronnie Lee Massey of Bangs for Public Intoxication.
All arrestees are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
