An attempted traffic stop on a Brownwood man known to have outstanding warrants on Thursday evening ended after the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a local church according to law enforcement officials.

According to Brown County Sheriff’s investigator Carlyle Gover, as he was travelling on West Commerce, he observed a wanted fugitive, Forest Fragua, driving a gray 2002 Chevrolet pickup near the intersection of Terrace drive around 6:25 p.m.

Gover followed Fragua as he drove down Terrace and noted that he failed to signal a turn and also began to increase his speed as if to elude the officer, the report states. A traffic stop was initiated and the patrol unit’s lights were activated; however Fragua failed to stop according to Gover’s report.

The vehicle continued onto Beaver Street, then south onto West Austin, and then continued onto Crothers where a female passenger was let out of the vehicle, Gover reported. He then continued on Crothers until he came to a dead end and drove into a vacant field. Gover tried to block Fragua in the lot; however, he drove around the patrol vehicle in reverse and then travelled back down Crothers and turned onto Hendricks, which was closed due to construction, the report states. Gover lost sight of the vehicle but was able to follow the dust trail which led him to Melwood Street where he eventually found Fragua to have crashed the pickup into the Greater Faith Community Church (417 Wesley Street), according to his report. Fragua fled on foot, but several witnesses pointed Gover in the direction Fragua fled. Gover found Fragua attempting to hide behind a potted plant on the church property near Booker Street, according to the report.

Gover reported that he pulled his pistol and ordered Fragua onto the ground. As Fragua was complying, Early Police officer Andre Smoot arrived and assisted by handcuffing Fragua. Another BCSO deputy, Shade Tidwell also arrived on scene. Fragua was searched and in his possession were a glass methamphetamine pipe and two plastic baggies containing approximately 3.5 grams of methamphetamine, the report states. Fragua also had over $1800 in cash on his person according to Gover’s report. The pickup was also searched and officers located 3.3 grams of marijuana along with numerous baggies and two sets of scales consistent with methamphetamine distribution. Fragua was arrested on the two outstanding warrants (from Texas Pardons and Parole and the US Marshal’s Office), possession of a controlled substance penalty group 1 with intent to deliver greater than 1 gram less than 4 grams in a drug free zone, evading arrest with a vehicle, evading arrest on foot, and possession of marijuana according to the report.
