Funeral services for LaVelle Chasteen, age 65, of Brownwood will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 29, at the High Mesa Cowboy Church with Pastors Todd King, Dennis Hall and Lloyd Tyson officiating.  Burial will follow at Greenleaf Cemetery under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early.  The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, August 28 at the funeral home.  Mr. Chasteen passed away Friday, August 26, 2011 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

LaVelle was born on December 8, 1945 in Brownwood, to Samuel and Lucille (Anderson) Chasteen.  He graduated from Brownwood High School and later attended Texas A&M, where he received his certificate in Law Enforcement.  LaVelle married Gwindle Williams on June 15, 1996 at the family farm near Stephenville.  After receiving his certificate, he worked for the Bedford Police Department before moving back to Brownwood nine years ago to work for the Police Department here.  He then worked at several hardware stores until his retirement.

Those left behind to cherish his memories include his wife, Gwindle Chasteen of Early; one son, J. L. Chasteen, Jr. and wife, Rene of Blanket; three step-daughters, Debra Noel and husband, Michael of Dublin, Teddie Holmes and husband, Darrell of Stephenville and Patty Dunlap and spouse, Brad of Homer, Alaska; 16 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Darrell Johnson of Weatherford, Billy Wayne Chasteen of Rowlette, sister, Shirley Taylor of Dallas, and Enola Lunsford of Greenville; aunt and uncle, Earlene and Clyde Adams and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, “dad” who raised him, Lewis Johnson; four brothers, Jake Johnson, Sherrill Johnson, Johnny Mack Johnson, and Raymond Chasteen and two sisters, Barbara Nell Johnson and Geneva Johnson.
