Laura Jeannette Reid Ledbetter of Brownwood, Texas passed away Monday, July 14, 2014 at the age of ninety six. A private family service was held Wednesday at Eastlawn Memorial Park under the direction of the Heartland Funeral Home.
Laura Jeannette Reid Ledbetter was born on August 6, 1917, at home in Proctor, Texas, the youngest of three children. After graduating from Dublin High School in 1935, she and her mother moved to Abilene so she could attend Draughn’s Business School. While in Abilene, she married W.P. (Dub) Ledbetter on November 16, 1938. After Abilene, relocations included Hobbs (NM), Haskell, Sweetwater, Ballinger, Brownwood, El Paso and Lovington (NM). They moved back to Brownwood in 1960 where both worked for TWT Molding Company. They both retired in 1973 to enjoy their travel until Dub passed away in 1979.
Coggin Avenue Baptist Church was the total focus of both their spiritual and social lives. Dub served as a Sunday school teacher, usher, and deacon. Jeannette served long and faithfully as bereavement coordinator and much longer as a member of the choir.Jeannette was particularly well suited for her role as grandmother. Affectionately known as “MamMa”, she missed much of their growing up as the children were following their career military father around the world. But she traveled to California, Oklahoma, Belgium, Italy, North Dakota, and Nebraska to spend time with them. And between visits, she kept a continual flow of care packages of clothes and toys.
Jeannette is affectionately remembered as a compassionate caregiver to her mother, brother, and uncle during the last years of their lives. And that compassion was inherited and amply demonstrated in her daughter’s dedicated care of her own mother during her last years.
Jeannette was preceded in death by her parents, brother, sister, husband, and infant twin son. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Dave and Jeanette of Menifee, California; daughter and son-in-law Dianne and Kenneth Day of Brownwood; granddaughter Leayh Loche and her husband Giovanni, great-grandsons Alessandro and Lorenzo of Murrieta, California; and grandson John of California.
Our MamMa will be greatly missed.
