Howard Payne University freshman Misael Carreno scored the winning goal over the Mississippi College soccer team with only 10 minutes left in the game Friday afternoon.
The second half had been all Mississippi College until Carreno found some open space all the way to the box. Brandon Maldonado found him there on a combination play from the sideline for the assist.
The first goal of the game came only one minute and 11 seconds into the game when Cameron Jannati and Brandon Maldonado hooked up and found Luis Tamex for a goal in the bottom left portion of the goal. HPU 1-0. The rest of the first half was contested by MC but scoreless. MC finished the half with 15 shots to HPU’s 4. Corners were MC 6, and HPU 0.
Only two minutes into the second half MC tied the game at 1-1 when Brandon Mitchell scored on a free kick from about 15 yards outside the box.
Again MC dominated shots in the second half with 11, HPU had 5. Fouls ended at MC 13 and HPU 15.
Three yellow cards came in the final nine minutes, with two for HPU and one for MC.
HPU men are now 6-3-1 overall and 4-3-0 in the American Southwest Conference. MC go to 7-3-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the ASC.
The next game for the men is tomorrow Saturday, a 3:00 p.m. start at Citizens National Bank Field.
Anna McKay played hero for the Howard Payne University women’s soccer team heading in a goal with only one minute left for the 1-0 win over Mississippi College.
The winning goal came off a corner kick from Shannon Costello. The corner was headed towards the goal then by Leslie Jones but then blocked out by a MC defender. Then Anna McKay headed the rebound and finished it off to score the game winner with only 1:10 left to play.
HPU had only two shots on goal before the final two in the closing minute. MC had four total shots on goal for the game as well. Fouls ended with MC at 5 and HPU at 11. Corner kicks were HPU 3 and MC 2.
HPU Goal Keeper Adrienne Walker recorded four saves on the day for the shutout. MC GK Jessica Ford had two saves.
HPU women go to 4-3-3 on the year overall and 3-2-2 in the American Southwest Conference. MC is 8-2-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the ASC.
The next game for the women is tomorrow Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Citizens National Bank Field.
