Landry Rulen Blackstock, 38, of Brownwood passed away unexpectedly on September 21, 2019 surrounded by family in Fort Worth.
Services will be Friday, September 27, 2019, at 1:00 P.M. in the Mims Auditorium on Howard Payne University Campus, Interment will follow at Eastlawn Cemetery.
A visitation will be held Thursday, September 26, 2019, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Heartland Funeral Home, 303 Early Blvd. in Early.
A Candlelight vigil will be held at Christ Chapel, 2101 Coggin Avenue in Brownwood at 7:30 on Wednesday evening.
Landry was born March 12, 1981, in Mena, Arkansas. He began attending Brownwood schools in 6th grade, graduating from Brownwood High School in 1999. He later graduated from Howard Payne University in 2003 and began teaching English and Speech at Brownwood High School. After earning the Masters in Education degree from Tarleton State University in 2008, he returned to Howard Payne as a Faculty member in the Department of Foundations, teaching English and serving as both Disability Service Coordinator and Campus Counselor. He later returned to the public school system, serving as a school counselor for San Saba ISD, the Heartland SPED Cooperative as a SPED counselor, and then again at BISD as an educational diagnostician. After completing a second Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from HPU in 2018, Landry accepted the position of Director of Special Populations for BISD. Landry was a Licensed Professional Counselor with the State of Texas, seeing clients at the Taylor Clinic in Brownwood.
In addition to serving his community through the field of education, Landry was the lead pastor of Christ Chapel Church of Brownwood, a position he held for the past 6 years. A born-again Christian from the age of 6, Landry spent the majority of his life devoted to ministry in various capacities. He preached his first sermon at the age of 13 and was an ordained pastor through the Apostolic Christian Network. He was a master of words and had a true servant’s heart. Landry lived a godly and wise life with unwavering integrity. He was a hard worker, an excellent provider, and a faithful steward over any and all resources entrusted to him. His work ethic and warm personality brought light to all who worked with him, and those lucky enough to discover his dry sense of humor know that he was a joy to be around – lighthearted, funny, and even a bit silly at times. Landry served on a few local boards and stayed active in several community projects, among which are the Lyric Performing Arts Company and Leadership Brownwood. He earned Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts of America in 1995, an achievement he treasured.
By far, Landry’s proudest accomplishment was his family. He was a faithful and loving husband to Joy Renée Blackstock née Garrett, whom he married on December 29, 2005. They were blessed with three beautiful daughters who were his heart and world. A proud and doting father, Landry considered his children to be his biggest priority and was dedicated to spending as much quality time with his girls as he could. Landry was also a devoted son who brought honor and joy to his parents. A godly man and steadfast husband, Landry was also a gentle and loving father, loyal friend, hard worker, effective teacher, moving orator, leader, mentor, lifelong learner, and one of the best men many of us will ever know. He touched hearts in a way few people do. Landry will be greatly missed.
Landry is survived by his wife, Joy Renée; his daughters, Livia, Evelyn, and Eliana Blackstock; his parents, Laurance and Jeannie Blackstock of Brownwood; sister, Loree Rosenquist of Brownwood; brother, Nathan Blackstock and wife Dana of Orlando, Florida; his aunt Yvonne and husband Don Sanderson of Brownwood; nieces and nephew Andreahnna, Courtney, and Nathan Rosenquist; cousins, uncles, aunts, and innumerable friends.
