The Lake Brownwood Lions Club presented several community organizations with donations at their meeting on Thursday. The Lake Brownwood Lions Club is one of the most active Lions clubs in the state of Texas, and makes multiple donations to the community each year.
All donations are funded through the club’s bingo nights where the club members volunteer their time. Awards were presented to Lake Brownwood Lions Club members who had gone above the required volunteer hours. Members who received awards include Don Draper, Vicci Draper, Richard Collins, Danny Steele, Gail Smiley, and John Kleibenstien.
The Lions Club gave the Lake Brownwood Volunteer Fire Department a $500 check, and the Meals on Wheels program $500 as well. A donation of $2000 was given to the Salvation Army to support their program to provide children with school supplies. Lorie McWhirter with the Salvation Army says she hopes to expand the program to surrounding towns with this donation.
The club also donated $2700 to the Howard Payne University ‘Winds of Triumph’ Instrumental group that will perform in London at the Olympics. In addition, the club gave $100 checks to each member of the instrumental group for spending money while they are in London. Four of the group’s members from the Brownwood area attended the meeting and expressed appreciation and gratitude for the donations. Stephen Goacher, director of ‘Winds of Triumph,’ and Dr. Robert Tucker, Dean of the School of Fine Arts at HPU, spoke and expressed their gratitude. Dr.Tucker also spoke on the selection process by which the group was chosen to go to the Olympics.
