Three Brownwood High School Lady Lions, Trejour Wilson, Kristin Fuentes, and Mckenzie Cox signed letters of intent to continue their sports careers at Tarleton State University and Angelo State University Wednesday afternoon.  Coaches along with friends and family gathered to honor these three athletes as they signed their commitment letters and wished them well.

Trejour Wilson will play basketball for Tarleton State University while studying criminology, with hopes to one day be a forensic psychologist.  She stated she chose Tarleton, after considering another college in Louisiana, because it was close to home.

“I wanted friends and family to be able to see me play since they supported me throughout my career,” said Wilson.

Regarding all of the accomplishments and awards Wilson received in high school, she stated that they serve as symbols of the hard work she put into the game.  “It wasn’t easy but it was worth it,” she explained.

Having Heather Hohertz as a coach has helped Wilson to develop a great work ethic which she believes will help her be successful against tougher opponent and faster paced games in college.  Although her ultimate goal in college is to win a championship ring, she stated that she is looking forward to forging strong healthy relationships with teammates that will last past the college years.

Coach Hohertz has worked with all three of these girls.  She personally wished Wilson the best.

“There is no one who deserves this more than you,” said Hohertz.  “You’re going to do a lot of good things.  Hohertz explained that through her high school years, Wilson had grown as a person and as a leader.  “I’m proud of you, I love you and will miss you.”

Coach Don Hood stated that Trejour makes it look very easy to play basketball, but that very few people knew the struggles of injuries and work she put in to make it so far.

Mckenzie Cox will also attend Tarleton State University, as a member of the track team, competing in the high jump.  Cox too considered a school in Louisiana but decided to stay closer to home with support of family and friends.  She stated that she visited TSU and it just felt more “homey,” and better fit her personality.

Cox had previously attended Early High School, but felt that Brownwood High offered coaches that were more familiar with her specialty, high jump, and that Coach Hood knew exactly what she needed to be doing, exactly how and what training she needed to be successful.

Cox plans to study Kinesiology and plans to become a physical therapist.

Coach Hood praised Cox for her hard work and almost unmatched work ethic.

Kristin Fuentes stated she already had toured Angelo State University and had plans to attend before coaches called her.  “I already loved the campus and the professors,” said Fuentes.

As a member of the track team, she will be a shot and discus thrower, and plans to work toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Although she has been a district champ in high school and has competed at the regional level, Fuentes knows collegiate sports offer a lot of good competitors and she will have to work even harder.  “I’m proud of myself for having made it this far,” said Fuentes of her qualifying for the regional meet this weekend.  “I hope to place first in shot and hopefully PR (set a personal record).”

Fuentes stated being an athlete coached by Don Hood has been a great experience, “He is such a great coach, always pushing you to do better.”

Hood stated that he noticed Fuentes’ athletic ability at the 6th grade city track meet, when she won the 100-yard dash.  He joked that that was when he knew she would be a star thrower one day.

To all three girls, Coach Hood wished the best of luck, “I wish you the best of luck, we’re going to miss you.  And, we thank you for what you have done for Brownwood High School.”
