hpusoccerlogoBROWNWOOD, Texas – Howard Payne University’s Leslie Jones and Shannon Costello each had a goal and an assist in a 2-0 American Southwest Conference win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Leslie Jones and Shannon Costello first hocked up in the match at the 11 minute mark when Costello’s shot found the net on a Jones assist.

The score remained the same till the 74th minute when this time it was a Costello assist to Jones scoring on a through ball from top of box.

Howard Payne stands at 8-4-0 overall and 7-3-0 ASC action. UMHB is now 4-10-1 overall and 4-7 in conference.

With the win the Lady Jackets are in a very strong postion to secure an ASC tournament spot with two conference matches remaining.

The Lady Jackets will travel next to Centenary College on Friday before coming home next week for their final regular season home match versus Southwestern University (Pink Out Game).


The Howard Payne University men’s soccer team’s late push came up short and the Yellow Jackets fell 2-1 to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Mary Hardin-Baylor grabbed a 1-0 lead when Tyler Wicks scored on a John Williams cross from the outside in the 11th minute.

UMHB extended their lead to 2-0 in the 75th minute on a goal by Michael White.

A Jaime Benitez free-kick from 35 yards out brought the game to within one just two minutes later. Howard Payne had many opportunities in the second to tie the game outshoting UMHB 11-3 in the half.

Howard Payne is now 6-7 overall and 4-6 in ASC play.  UMHB stands at 9-3-1 overall and 8-3 in conference.

The Jackets will travel on Friday to Shreveport, LA to play Centenary College.
