It was a shut out at the Pink Out day for the Howard Payne University women’s soccer team as they got the 3-0 win over the University of Dallas Tuesday afternoon in Brownwood.

For October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, pink was everywhere. There were pink jerseys, game balls, corner flags, headbands, tape, balloons, ribbons, soccer cleats, and even pink game programs, all in support of the “Susan G. Komen for the Cure.”

The women’s soccer program was able to raise over $1,000 for the “Susan G. Komen for the Cure”.

When the game got started, the first goal didn’t take long, as the Lady Jackets strike just 1:23 into the game. Shannon Costello put a corner kick into the box and senior Lauren Lewis found the bottom left of the goal for the early 1-0 lead.

The next goal came in the 13th minute off another Costello corner, but this time Leslie Jones would head in the goal and take the game to 2-0.

Jones would strike again just 10 minutes later unassisted, when a ball deflected off a defender into the box where she would clean up the rest and take the game to its final score 3-0.

In the second half, Jones had two other shots saved by UDallas goalie, Brigid Hasson that would keep her from nearly grabbing her third hat-trick of the season. Jones now has 14 goals on the season, for second in the American Southwest Conference.

Adrienne Walker started in goal for HPU and played the first half ending with 3 saves. Kaitlyn Kelm and Courtney Beene combined work in the second half for 5 saves.

HPU ended with 11 shots on goal out of 21 shot attempts, while UDallas had 8 shots on goal on 13 attempts. Corner kicks ended UDallas 6 and HPU 8.

The Lady Jackets move to 8-4-3 overall on the season. UDallas goes to 4-10-1 overall.

The next game for the women is at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29 against Texas Lutheran at Citizens National Bank soccer field in Brownwood.
