The Howard Payne University women’s basketball team used a big run to start the second half to get the win 72-53 over the East Texas Baptist University Tigers.
The win makes five-straight American Southwest Conference wins for the Lady Jackets, taking their conference record above .500 for the first time this season after starting their conference campaign 0-4.
At the half, the Lady Jackets only held a 5-point lead over the Tigers after being up as much as 17. ETBU would outscore HPU 21-9 in the last nine minutes of the opening half.
To start the second, the Lady Jackets got back on track and went on a 20-10 run of their own to expand their lead back out to 15 at 50-35. From there they never looked back growing their lead out to as much as 23.
LadyJacket guard, Brittany Roberson led all scorers with 16 points, six rebounds and eight assists. Clarissa Krum added 14 points and six rebounds. Kalin Hanna finished with five blocks off the bench.
As a team, the Lady Jackets were 48 percent from the floor on 26 of 54 shooting and 30 percent from the arc on 8 of 27 shooting.
Brandace Latin had 11 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers. As a team, the Tigers shot 33 percent from the floor on 17 of 52 shooting.
ETBU won the rebound battle 35-33, but had 21 turnovers to Howard Payne’s 12.
The Lady Jackets are now 8-5 for the year and 5-4 in the ASC. The Tigers go to 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the ASC. The next game for the Lady Jackets is at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13 in Abilene against McMurry University.
