BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University softball team split a double header with Texas Lutheran University 5-4 and 0-2 Thursday at Lady Jacket Field.
In game one, Howard Payne found themselves down 2-0 after the third with single runs by Texas Lutheran in the 2nd and 3rd innings.
The Lady Jackets pulled to within one in the fourth when Jessica Morales doubled home Brittany Johnson to make it 1-2 TLU.
TLU added two runs in the sixth to pull ahead 1-4. The Lady Jackets rallied in the bottom of the seventh. HPU got it going when Ashley Silva singled to left field scoring Justin Farrell-Raborn. Later with the bases loaded, a Haleigh Caraway double to right center scored three runs and won the game for HPU 5-4.
Caraway recorded the win for Howard Payne giving up four runs on 11 hits. TLU’s Megan Carmichael was tabbed with the loss.
In game two, the Lady Jackets could not get key hits with runners in scoring position. In the 0-2 loss, HPU stranded eight runners in the game.
Starter, Baillie Trumble, pitched three hitless innings striking out three. Kayla Castillo threw three innings in relief giving up the two runs and recording the loss. Jenna Allen also saw one inning of action.
Howard Payne is now 9-17 overall and 7-5 in ASC play and TLU is at 9-17 overall and 2-8 in conference. The two teams will complete their conference series together on Saturday with a double header starting at noon.
