The Howard Payne Lady Jackets found the back of the net twice before the midway point of the first half and held off a late attempted rally by the Concordia University Texas to stay undefeated with a 2-1 win.
Howard Payne (3-1, ASC 2-0) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard and took the lead in the fifth minute. Shortly following a corner kick, Leslie Jones took a loose ball at the top of the box and let it fly. The ball hit off the top of the crossbar and was ruled in following the bounce to put the Lady Jackets ahead.
HPU added insurance to their lead in the 20th minute when Jordyn Stephens came in all alone on a breakaway against CTX goal keeper. The keeper initially made a point-blank save, but Stephens collected her own rebound and tapped the ball into the net.
Concordia (3-4, ASC 1-2) doubled Howard Payne up in total shots attempted during the second stanza in an attempt to rally. Concordia was able to get on the board in the 87th minute.
Howard Payne’s Adrienne Walker stopped nine of the 24 shots she saw to pick up the victory.
Howard Payne will be at the University of Texas at Tyler on Saturday continuing conference play.
Jackets Fall in Overtime to Concordia
Concordia University Texas scored the golden goal in the 100th minute to post a 2-1 overtime win over the Howard Payne University men’s soccer team on Thursday.
After a scoreless first half, Concordia got on the scoreboard first in the 68th minute. The Yellow Jackets, however, were able to net the equalizer when Jaime Benitez found an open Shane Cazad on
the right side of the box in the 80th minute.
Concordia outshot Howard Payne 5-1 in the overtime period scoring the winning goal in the 100th minute.
Howard Payne’s (3-2, ASC 1-1) Kyle Huesing suffered the loss despite turning away seven of the 32 shots he faced.
The Yellow Jackets will continue their road trip playing on Saturday against the University of Texas at Tyler.
