jacketbasketball_logoDANVILLE, KY – The Howard Payne University women’s basketball team opened the 2010-2011 season with a 74-64 win over Centre College on day one of the 2010 Country Hearth Inn/Lee’s Famous Recipe Classic Friday.

The Lady Jackets shot 42% from the field while holding Centre to just 35% for the game. HPU’s bench led the charge outscoring Centre’s bench 37 to 17. The Lady Jackets also had 12 second chance points to Centre’s four.

Howard Payne started the game well and built a nine point lead on a Clarissa Krum 3-pointer with 14:30 left in the first half.

Centre when on a run and gained the lead by one, 29-30 with 3:24 left in the half. HPU then when on a 7-0 run to end the half and hold a 36-30 halftime lead. In remained about the same to start the second, then Howard Payne went on an 11-0 run midway through the second half to put the game away. HPU held off a late push by Centre to post the 74-64 win.

Clarissa Krum led all scorers with 19 points along with nine rebounds. Katy Sarem added 10 points and four assists. Freshman Kalin Hanna had a great game off the bench with eight points, seven rebounds, and a game high six blocks.

Chelsea Benham and Maggie Prewitt each had 13 points for Centre. Paige Baechle come off the bench and scored 10.


The Howard Payne women’s basketball team got 18 points from senior Katy Sarem and defeated Blackburn College 69-48 to finish out the 2010 Country Hearth Inn/Lee’s Famous Recipe Classic at Centre College on Saturday.

The Lady Jackets opened up an early six-point lead in the first four minutes on a layup by Katy Sarem. Sarem, who finished with a game high 18 points, was 7 of 10 from the field and 4 of 6 from behind the arc.

Howard Payne continued to build their lead and held a 35-19 halftime advantage. The Lady Jackets shot 45% from the field in the half.

HPU capitalized off of Blackburn turnovers and extended their lead in the second half. A pair of free-throw by Brittany Roberson with 4:50 left in the game gave Howard Payne their largest lead at 62-37.

Scoring 22 points off of turnovers and getting 31 points from the bench, the Lady Jackets went on to win 69-48.

Clarissa Krum had 10 points and four assists. Megan Norvil had nine points and Sarah Pfiester added eight rebounds and three blocks.

Clarissa Krum and Katy Sarem were both named to the All-Classic Team for their performances.

Rashonda Willis led Blackburn with 16 points and Andrea Kleinsorge added eight.

Howard Payne improves to 2-0 on the year and Blackburn falls to 0-3 overall. Howard Payne will play next on November 25th against the University of Texas – Dallas at 1:00 pm.
