The Howard Payne softball team fell short to Hardin-Simmons on Saturday, dropping both games of their double header 5-1 and 7-0.
Hardin-Simmons started things off with a lead, scoring one run in the first inning. A double by Kimble Luna in the bottom of the fifth set up a RBI double from Haleigh Caraway to send Luna in for the tying run, moving the score to 1-1.
HSU answered back quickly, scoring one run in the top of the sixth, and secured the win in the seventh inning with a three-run homerun from Taylor Namey, putting the Cowgirls on top 5-1 to end the game.
Despite pitching six innings, HPU’s Shelby Wahrmund would be charged with the loss, and Megann Lewis would get the win for the Cowgirls.
In the second game, HPU remained scoreless with hits by Mallory Wood, Kayla Castillo, Katie Poerner, and Caraway compared to HSU’s 11 hits and no errors.
Haleigh Caraway would get the loss in her full seven innings of work, while HSU’s Sarah Shurbet received the win in four innings. Laura Rawlings was credited with the save for HSU in three innings pitched.
Howard Payne drops to 9-18 on the year and 6-12 in the American Southwest Conference action. Hardin-Simmons improves to 20-6, and 13-2 in conference play.
The Lady Jackets will be back in action in Austin on Friday, April 16 against Concordia University. Scheduled start time for the double header will be 5:00 p.m.
