TYLER, Texas – The Howard Payne University women’s basketball team held the University of Texas Tyler Patriots to just 29% shooting in a 72-51 win, at the Herrington Patriot Center on Saturday.
In the first 8:30 of the game, Howard Payne held UT Tyler to just two field goals gaining a 14-5 lead.
After a 20 minute delay due to a lighting malfunction in the gym, both teams came out shooting better from the field. Katy Sarem led Howard Payne with 13 first half points, while Patriot Paige Parrish had nine points.
At the end of the first half, the score was 40-25 in favor of the Lady Jackets. The Patriots only shot 27 percent from the field, including 1-9 from three point range.
In the second half, the story was much of the same. Howard Payne increased their lead to 45-25 before the Patriots went on a short, 8-0 run to cut the Lady Jacket lead to 45-32. The Patriots would not get any closer the rest of the game.
The Lady Jackets outscored the Patriots, 27-19, the rest of the way, leading by as much as 26 points with four minutes left to play.
Howard Payne was led by Katy Sarem’s game high 19 points. Freshman Kalin Hanna added 10 points and three blocks off the bench.
Ally Allen led the Patriots recording a double-double in the contest, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Paige Parrish chipped in with 11 points off the bench, and Melissa Thomas added 10 points.
Howard Payne held UT Tyler to just 10 percent from three point range, but were out-rebounded by UT Tyler 44-40 for the game.
Howard Payne breaks their four game losing skid to stand at 3-4 overall and 1-4 in ASC play. UT Tyler falls to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in conference action.
The Lady Jackets will travel on to Longview to play LeTourneau University on Monday at 5:30 pm.
