The Howard Payne University women’s basketball team used a 46 point second half to defeat East Texas Baptist University 80-45 in American Southwest Conference action Thursday evening. Tresta Donahoo had another big game off the bench for Howard Payne scoring a game high 16 points along with five assists. Donahoo was 5 of 7 from the field, 3 of 4 from the three-point line and 3 of 3 from the charity stripe.
After leading 34-23 at the break, the Lady Jackets scored 46 second half points to coast to the 80-45 win. The Howard Payne bench outscored ETBU’s 54-18 and the Lady Jackets scored 31 of their points off of 37 ETBU turnovers.
The 25th ranked Lady Jackets improve to 10-2 overall and 7-2 in conference while ETBU falls to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in confernce.
Jasmin Thomas scored 10 followed by Dana Marrs with nine. Kalin Hanna grabbed a team high nine rebounds and Brittany Roberson recorded four steals.
ETBU was led by Holly Phelps with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Amanda Rucker also added 10 points.
Howard Payne will travel to Centenary College(LA) on Saturday for a 1:00 pm game to complete the road trip.
While the Lady Jackets were victorious, the Jackets suffered a loss to ETBU.
The Howard Payne University men’s basketball team was held to 29% shooting for the game in a 89-66 loss to East Texas Baptist University Thursday evening.
The Yellow Jackets found thenselves down 10-0 to start the game and did not record their first bucket till 16:25 on the clock. Howard Payne’s shooting woes continued and the Jackets found themselves down 48-30 at the half.
ETBU shot 52% from the field in the game and was 11 of 23 from behind the three-point line for 48%. The Jackets were outrebounded 48-38 in the game.
Howard Payne are now 6-6 overall and 4-5 in conference. ETBU is 6-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Howard Payne was led by Brandon Irwin with a game high 29 points. Irwin was 8 of 16 from the field and 12 of 13 from the free-throw line. Travis Taillet finished with 10 points with Henry Valladares following with nine.
J.D. Richardson led ETBU with 19 points followed by Jaron Joseph with 17. Jeremy LaGarde had 13 points with five assists.
The Yellow Jackets will end this road trip on Saturday at Centenary College(LA) with a 3:00 pm game.
