KERRVILLE, Texas-The Howard Payne women’s basketball team defeated Schreiner University 54-44 Thursday night in American Southwest Conference action.
Shooting just 38% in the first half, Howard Payne only held a 27-23 lead at the break. Schreiner shot 45% from the field in the first to keep them in the game.
Howard Payne opened up a 16 point lead with 12 minutes to play. Schreiner rallied to cut the HPU lead to 6, 43-37 with just under 8 minutes to play. The Lady Jacket held the lead and posted the 54-44 win.
HPU shot 50% from the field in the second and held Schreiner 20% and 32% for the game. The Lady Jackets out rebounded Schreiner 30-17 in the game.
Katy Sarem led HPU with 11 points along with 6 steals. Hope Hohertz followed with 10 points. Elaine Hobbs led on the boards with a game high 8 rebounds.
Schreiner was led by Candi Althaus with 12. Mercedes Corona added 10.
Howard Payne improves to 16-4 overall and 12-4 in ASC play, while Schreiner falls to 0-20, 0-16 in ASC action.
The Lady Jackets will play next on Saturday in Seguin against Texas Lutheran University at 1:00 pm.
