hpusoccerlogoLeslie Jones’ golden goal with less than a minute to play gave Howard Payne University a 2-1 victory over Mississippi College Thursday afternoon in American Southwest Conference women’s soccer action.

Leslie Jones got two unassisted goals in the game the first coming in the 26th minute to give Howard Payne the 1-0 lead.

Mississippi College tied the game at 1-1 just nine minutes into the second period on a shot that deflected off the crossbar and in.

With just 40 seconds left in regulation, Jones was able to get around the MC defense and netted a shot one on one with the goal keeper.

Adrienne Walker got the win for Howard Payne recording 13 saves in 90 minutes of action. Bethany Roberson and Elizabeth Beatty each played a period for MC and each giving up one goal.

Howard Payne improves to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while MC falls to 6-5 overall and 3-3 in ASC action.

The Lady Jackets will be in Pineville, LA on Saturday taking on Louisiana College in another ASC match.


Howard Payne University could not hold on to an early lead and fell to Mississippi College 1-2 in American Southwest Conference men’s soccer action Thursday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets got one the board first when Shane Cazad found Reese Lawson for the header in the 25th minute of play.

MC answered back just two minutes later when Brian Vasquez scored his first of two goals in the game on a 25 yard free kick.

The game remained tied at 1-1 until the 76th minute when Vasquez scored his second of the game on an assist from Danilo Ivan Brizuela.

Kyle Huesing played all 90 minutes in goal for HPU recording six saves. Robert Jackson played the whole game in goal for MC recording just one save.

Howard Payne now stands at 4-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play. MC is now 9-3 overall and 4-2 in ASC action.

The Yellow Jackets will be in Pineville, LA on Saturday taking on Louisiana College.
