CLINTON, Miss – The Howard Payne women’s basketball team got a game high 23 points from Brittany Roberson in a 68-63 victory over Mississippi College Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference action.
It was Howard Payne’s 16 second chance points to MC’s 4 that was a huge factor in the game. HPU outrebounded MC 38-33 but also held a 14 to 5 advantage on the offensive glass.
Howard Payne now stands at 4-2 overall and 2-2 in conference while MC falls to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Late in the game MC had battled back from a 10-point second half deficit to take the lead 63-61 with 1:23 left in the game. A three-point bucket by HPU’s Brittany Roberson on their next possesion gave the Lady Jackets the lead back, 64-63.
Roberson finished with a game high 23 points powered by 4 of 4 shooting from behind the arc. She was 8 of 11 from the field and 3 of 3 from the free-throw line in the game.
After the Roberson three in the final minute, it was two Jasmin Thomas steals that helded secure the game for the Lady Jackets. Thomas had six total steals for the game along with five assists and four points.
The Lady Jackets held a 31-30 halftime lead after both teams shared the lead at some point. HPU extended their lead in the second to 10, 50-40 on a layup by Sanae Dillard with 10:48 to play in the game.
Along with Roberson’s 23 points, Roshonda Gayden posted a double double of 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Jackets.
MC was led by Caitlin Brown with 15 and Traci Rodgers with 10 points.
Howard Payne will be at home next Saturday in a 5:30 pm game with the University of Texas at Tyler.
The Howard Payne University men’s basketball team fell 94-72 to hot shooting Mississippi College Saturday afternoon in confernce action.
The HPU Yellow Jackets could not recover from a run by Mississippi College late in the first half. MC led 44-31 at the break and pushed their lead to as much as 23 eight minutes into the second half. MC shot 62% from the field and 47% from behind the arc in the game.
HPU is now 3-4 overall and 1-3 in conference action. MC is 1-3 overall and 1-3 in conference.
The Jackets were able to cut the MC lead to just 11, 65-54 on a Brandon Gould layup with ten minutes left in the game. Gould finished with 18 points for Howard Payne.
MC extended their lead again and held on for the 94-72 win. MC had six players in double digits led by Chad Jones’ 22 points.
Brandon Irwin also had 18 points along with five rebounds for the Jackets. Joshua Dada also added 17 points for HPU.
The Jackets will be at home next Saturday at 7:30 pm versus the University of Texas at Tyler.
