jacketbasketball_logoHoward Payne University guards Brittany Roberson and Dana Marrs each get 13 points as the Lady Jackets cruise to a 77-57 win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Howard Payne dominated the paint offensively outscoring UMHB 30-18 but HPU was outrebounded 45-38.

The Lady Jackets improve to 17-3 overall and 13-3 in conference. UMHB falls to 3-17 overall and 2-14 in conference action.

Howard Payne used a 18-3 run midway through the first half to push their lead to 21 points. A McKinley Meyer free-throw with 5:51 left in the first half gave HPU a 35-14 lead.

After leading 47-20 at the break, the Lady Jacket extended their lead to as much as 30 in the second half. With the HPU reserves in the game, the Lady Jackets cruised to the 77-57 win.

 

Brittany Roberson and Dana Marrs each scored13. Roberson added three steals and three assists. Marrs was 3 of 5 from behind the arc.

Brittany Zamora led UMHB with 13 points and six assists. Lauren Reece added 11.

Howard Payne will play Concordia Texas on Saturday at 1:00 pm. With a win over Concordia, the Lady Jackets would have a share of the ASC West Division lead.

 


The Howard Payne University men’s basketball fell for the second time this season to the No. 10 ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 76-55 Thursday evening.

 

Even though turnovers and rebounds were close between the teams, it was what Mary Hardin-Baylor did with their opportunities that made the difference. UMHB had 27 fastbreak points to HPU’s 5 and outscored the Yellow Jackets in the paint 42-28.

Howard Payne falls to 8-12 overall and 6-10 in conference. Mary Hardin-Baylor improves 19-1 overall and 15-1 in conference.

UMHB opened up an early lead and went on to hold a 42-23 halftime advantage. The Jackets would pull within 12 points midway through the second only to have UMHB put together a run to put the game away.

Brandon Gould led Howard Payne with 14 points and three steals. Brandon Irwin finished with 12 and Henry Valladares had 10 with seven rebounds.

UMHB was led by James Allen with a game high 19 points and five assists. Kitrick Bell had 16 points and Thomas Orr scored 13 off the bench.

Howard Payne will take on Concordia University Texas on Saturday at 3:00 pm in the coliseum.
