In a close game throughout, the Howard Payne University women’s basketball team pulled away in the closing minutes winning 80-68 over Concordia University Texas Saturday afternoon at the Coliseum.
The Lady Jacket win keeps the number two spot in the ASC West Division, but still two games behind Hardin-Simmons.
HPU’s Brittany Roberson finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds. Clarissa Krum finished with a team-high 17 points, while grabbing seven rebounds herself.
Concordia led at the half, 35-36. To start the second half, the Lady Jackets went on a run and opened up a 52-44 lead.
From there, the Tornados would come within one point of the Lady Jackets lead twice, but would never break through for the remainder of the game.
HPU dominated on the fast break scoring 16 points on the run compared to CTX’s two. For the game, the Lady Jackets shot 47 percent (27 of 58), while holding CTX to 37 percent (28 of 75).
HPU goes to 13-6 overall and 10-5 in the American Southwest Conference, and Concordia falls to 10-8 overall on the season and 9-6 in the ASC.
The next game for the Lady Jackets is at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3 against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton.
