Tresta Donahoo scored 19 points for Howard Payne as the Lady Jackets defeated East Texas Baptist University 88-72 in game four of the 2013 American Southwest Conference women’s basketball tournament at the Brownwood Coliseum on Friday night.
In the first half, both teams came out trading baskets as the score would be tied 10-10 with 13:44 on the clock. ETBU would later lead 21-20 with 7:03 remaining. Howard Payne then went on a 16-5 run to lead 36-26 with 2:39 left to play. The Lady Jackets led 40-30 as the first half ended.
The Tigers started the out the second half outscoring HPU 12-9 to trail 42-49 with 14:38 remaining. The Lady Jackets then answered, outscoring ETBU 21-13 to improve their lead 70-53 at the seven minute mark. Howard Payne would later lead 84-70 with 1:53 on the clock and finished ahead 88-72 at the final buzzer.
Howard Payne and ETBU both shot 39.1% from the field. HPU recorded 52 rebounds while the Tigers finished with 40.
In addition to Donahoo, Dana Marrs finished with 15 points, while Kayla Scott provided 13 and Breanna Conway had 12. Danyel Bradley led the Lady Jackets with 8 rebounds.
Mary Slaughter scored 33 points to lead ETBU, while April Leonard had 16. Slaughter and Amanda Rucker each recorded 7 rebounds to lead the Tigers.
The Lady Jackets will take on the University of Texas at Dallas at 4:30 pm on Saturday in round two of the ASC Championship Tournament.
