AUSTIN, Texas – The Howard Payne Lady Jacket basketball team rallied to within one in the closing minutes but fell to Concordia University Texas 73-69 Thursday at Concordia Field House.
Down 16 at the half, the Howard rallied to within one with a minute remaining. The Lady Jackets were not able to keep Concordia scoring in the closing seconds to steal the win.
An Abby Parmelly three-pointer with 1:11 left brought HPU to within one, 68-67. Concordia hit 5 of 6 free-throws in the last minute to give them the win.
The difference in the game was truly at the free-throw line with Concordia sinking 27 of 33 attempts to Howard Payne 11 of 13.
Howard Payne was led by Jasmin Thomas with 16 points. Brittany Roberson had 12 points with four assists. Sarah Pfiester followed with 10 points.
Concordia was led by Tiesha Martin with 16. Shamika Singleton had 15 points and a game high 15 rebounds.
Howard Payne falls to 14-7 overall and 11-6 in ASC play. Now in a second place tie in the ASC west division with HPU, Concordia improves to 12-8 overall and 11-6 in conference action.
The Lady Jackets will have a four game home stand to end the regular season starting with Texas Lutheran University this next Thursday.
